Trade Benefits Wisconsin, Slater Tells Candidates

As Wisconsin’s April 5th primary approaches, AEM President Dennis Slater took to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on Sunday to defend pro-manufacturing trade policy.

Writing for Wisconsin’s biggest daily newspaper, Slater forcefully defended pro-manufacturing trade agreements and dispelled some of the biggest myths about trade being perpetuated on the campaign trail.

“Any candidate who comes to Wisconsin and says that closing our borders and erecting trade barriers will help our state's manufacturers betrays his or her understanding of our industry,” Slater wrote. “It's not possible to both advocate on behalf of manufacturing in Wisconsin and at the same time agitate in favor of trade wars that would hurt Wisconsin manufacturers' global competitiveness.”

The op-ed is part of the suite of activities AEM has undertaken to support manufacturing issues in the days leading up to the Wisconsin primary, a pivotal contest for both Republicans and Democrats. Among the resources available to AEM members is an I Make America toolkit designed to help tell employees or community members about the manufacturing issues at stake in Wisconsin.
